What is an Ileostomy? |
|
| |
An ileostomy is a surgically created opening in the abdominal wall through which digested food passes.
The end of the ileum (the lowest part of the small intestine) is brought through the abdominal wall to form a stoma. |

Colleen
McGinn was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when she was only twelve
years old. After five major surgeries and over fifty minor surgeries,
Colleen finally ended up with an ileostomy. She affectionately calls
it "Stub" as a way of putting humor into dealing with
her disease.
Like many Crohn's patients she adjusted with help of
her family, friends and especially her mother. She shares her experience
with others through support groups and volunteering with the CCFA.
Most of her volunteering efforts are with young adults and children.
With input from many of the friends she has helped over
the past
20 years, she developed bagit! with hopes
that it will help ileostomy
patients cope with their
situation in a fun and positive way.
Colleen feels attitude is very important in learning
to deal with
every day obstacles and believes
"You can always find a positive
in every situation."
